Jakarta - Kondisi hutan di Nigeria kian memprihatinkan. Maraknya penebangan liar membuat hutan itu mulai sirna. Pohon sulit ditemukan karena sudah habis ditebang.

Jauh di dalam hutan di desa Ebute Ipare, Nigeria, Egbontoluwa Marigi mengukur sebatang pohon mahoni yang tinggi, lalu menebangnya dengan kapak dan parang, (24/1/2022).

Ketika pohon tersebut tumbang usai mengeluarkan bunyi gemeretak, dia pergi ke tempat lain untuk mencari pohon berikutnya.

Sementara itu, di sekelilingnya tunggul-tunggul bekas tebangan bertebaran di hutan berawa itu, seakan jadi pengingat bahwa di situ pernah berdiri pohon-pohon yang tinggi.

Pohon-pohon tinggi yang bisa menyelamatkan bumi itu kini hilang akibat penebangan liar yang semakin marak terjadi di negara bagian Ondo, barat daya Nigeria.

Seorang penebang pohon mengatakan bahwa dulunya ia dan penebang lainnya bisa menebang 15 pohon di satu lokasi. Namun, kini mereka kesulitan mendapat pohon karena sudah habis ditebang.

Dari tahun 2001 hingga 2021, Nigeria sendiri sudah kehilangan 1,14 juta hektare hutan, yang setara dengan 11 persen penurunan luas hutan sejak 2000. Menurut Global Forest Watch, platform penyedia data dan pemantau hutan, penurunan itu juga sebanding dengan 587 juta ton emisi karbon.

Setelah menebang pohon, Marigi menandai batangnya sebagai pesan bagi penebang lain bahwa tebangan itu adalah miliknya. Batang-batang pohon akan diangkut lewat anak sungai dan sungai besar ke pusat perdagangan Nigeria, Lagos.

Marigi sendiri paham bahwa hutan harus dilindungi. Namun, yang terpenting baginya adalah mencari nafkah. Berbulan-bulan setelah menebang pohon, Marigi kembali lagi ke hutan itu untuk menarik batang kayu dan mengikatnya menjadi rakit. Dia punya simpanan lebih dari 40 gelondong.

Bersama-sama penebang lain, dia menyewa sebuah kapal penarik untuk mengangkut rakit-rakit gelondong melewati sungai dari Ondo ke Lagos.

Pohon yang ditebang diambil kayunya, kemudian membuka lahan pertanian atau memenuhi kebutuhan energi bagi populasi yang terus bertambah, mengancam keberlangsungan hutan alami di Nigeria.
