Filipina - Filipina-China sejak lama terlibat dalam perselisihan Laut China Selatan. Di tengah sengketa, para nelayan tetap melaut selama yang mereka bisa secara legal.

Diketahui Filipina telah menolak larangan penangkapan ikan pada musim panas tahunan yang diberlakukan oleh China di wilayah Laut China Selatan yang disengketakan. Filipina mendorong kapal-kapal nelayannya untuk terus memancing di wilayah perairan negara itu.

Nelayan setempat menyebut menyesali sikap pemerintah Filipina yang tidak tegas dengan klaimnya atas perairan Laut Filipina Barat terhadap serbuan China.

Nelayan juga menyatakan kecewa dengan Presiden Filipina Rodrigo Duterte karena perebutan kembali Laut Filipina Barat tidak pernah menjadi janji kampanyenya.

Diketahui sebelum kepresidenan Duterte, Filipina memenangkan kasus arbitrase penting terhadap China pada tahun 2016. Dimana pada saat itu pengadilan internasional membatalkan klaim China atas Laut China Selatan termasuk pulau-pulau dan beting dalam zona ekonomi eksklusif 200 mil laut China.

Di tengah ketegangan kedua negara tersebut, nelayan Filipina tetap memilih menangkap ikan selama yang mereka bisa secara legal.

Para nelayan mengatakan melaut di daerah sengketa tersebut telah menjadi rutinitas mereka sejak bertahun-tahun silam.

Hal itulah yang membuat para nelayan berharap adanya ketegasan pemerintah Filipina untuk memperjuangkan wilayah sengketa tersebut.
