Srinagar - Desforestasi dan perubahan iklim menyebabkan hewan liar mendekati pemukiman warga. Akibatnya beruang hitam Himalaya didapati menyerang banyak warga Kashmir.

Di tengah perselisihan mematikan yang telah lama berkecamuk di Kashmir, ada konflik lain yang diam-diam menelan korban di wilayah Himalaya: konflik antara manusia dan hewan liar.

Tercatat setidaknya ada 67 orang tewas dan 940 lainnya terluka dalam lima tahun terakhir akibat serangan hewan liar di Lembah Kashmir.

Beruang hitam Himalaya menjadi pelaku utama dari masalah ini. Para ahli mengatakan lebih dari 80% kematian dan penganiayaan disebabkan oleh serangan beruang hitam.

Pada bulan Agustus, seekor beruang hitam menerkam Manzoor Ahmad Dar di kebun sayurnya. Hingga kini ia masih belum pulih dari cedera kepala yang serius.

Tahun lalu, Showkat Ahmed Khatana, seorang pengembara berusia 50 tahun, tewas ketika mencoba menyelamatkan adik laki-lakinya dari serangan beruang hitam di dekat rumah mereka di daerah Harwan, Srinagar.

Deforestasi dan perubahan iklim menjadi alasan para hewan liar mendekati pemukiman warga untuk mencari makanan dan tempat berlindung.

Rashid Naqash, kepala sipir satwa liar Kashmir, mengatakan bahwa sebelumnya, beruang hitam biasa melakukan hibernasi selama musim dingin. Tapi sekarang mereka aktif bahkan di musim dingin akibat perubahan iklim.

Konflik juga semakin memanas karena populasi satwa liar meningkat seiring dengan hampir berhenti perburuan satwa akibat situasi keamanan yang mencekam dan kehadiran pasukan India di kawasan hutan.
