BOYOLALI, INDONESIA - SEPTEMBER 05: Villagers carry tobacco leaves at Stabelan village, located just less than four kilometers from top of mount Merapi on September 5, 2013 in Boyolali, Central Java, Indonesia. Mount Merapi is considered to be one of the worlds most active volcanoes, yet tens of thousands of Indonesians typically live on the slopes of the volcano. Many of these people rely on the fertile soil and volcanic ash as a means of income. The most recent major eruption was in 2010 when it is reported that over 150 people were killed and 320,000 displaced. Annual rituals are held during which locals will climb to the top of Mount Merapi and make offerings of livestock and vegetables to appease the spirits of the volcano.
